Quality retread tyre is perfectly safe for use and is a key component of a TB (truck & bus) tyre's "total life". Every major new TB tyre manufacturer designs its TB tyres for multiple lives, and expects the tyre to be retreaded to achieve as many lives as possible.

To produce safe and quality retread tyres, it is essential to have proper screening and selection of good quality casings, proper repairs of punctures and casing injuries, proper processing to technical specifications and industry standards, and final pre-delivery QC checks.

Casing selection must necessarily be strictly guided by industry casing grading standards, and only casings that have passed stringent screening procedures should be deemed retreadable. Reputable retreaders invariably employ advanced high-tech equipment for this critical filtering process.

To ensure a retreadable casing's strength is not significantly compromised, any punctures and injuries that are within repairable limit need to be properly repaired to correct technical specifications. Users should not be unduly concerned about multiple repair patches; on the contrary, they should be cautious about casings without any repair patch. This is because it is practically impossible or extremely rare, for the casing of a tyre that have gone through one life on the road, to have no puncture or injury whatsoever. In other words, necessary repairs should be viewed positively as they essentially serve to restore casing strength.

Proper processing to produce a safe and good quality retread tyre encompasses various key processes, including buffing, skiving, building and curing, and these must comply with technical specifications and industry standards. In Malaysia, the current applicable standard for retreading process is MS224 : 2005.

The importance of appropriate pre-delivery QC checks cannot be stressed enough, as this is a final screening process to ensure retread tyres rolling out from the factory are of the highest safety and quality standards.
